The Cat Who Wanted to Drive

The police were interviewing the family.
“Someone took our car from outside the mall. When we came back, it was parked outside our house,” said Mother.
“Did the thieves take anything?” asked the police.
“Nothing! They only messed up the house but didn’t steal a thing,” said Father.

But in the corner, someone was sitting and waving her tail, and she knew... everything.

My name is Fluffy, and I am a pet cat.
Every Saturday, the family I live with went shopping. Today was Saturday. We were all loaded in the car. It was my dream to drive, but every Saturday when I got on the driver’s seat, they would just hush me away.

So today, I didn’t try to take a turn driving because I had a marvelous plan! I went to the back seat of the car so that they would forget me.
When we reached the mall, they totally forgot me and left me alone in the car. Before leaving the house, I had secretly taken the spare car keys from the hooks on the kitchen wall.

When they left, I put the keys in, rolled down the window, jumped out, and went to the nearest dumpster.
The cats who were eating rubbish came forward and screeched at me.
“Aren’t you tired of eating all this rubbish?” I asked.
“We don’t need your sympathy,” hissed a brown cat.
“No, I think you got the wrong idea. I’m here to give you good food, if... you help me drive the car,” I offered.
The cats looked suspicious, but they agreed. They followed me to the car, and we all jumped inside.

Two cats sat on the brakes and the gas pedal. Some cats sat on the seats to look out the windows so we wouldn’t bump into other cars. Two cats sat on the driver’s seat, and I climbed on top of them, just to be high enough, so I could finally drive!

I started the car, and then we drove off at full speed. When we got near a police check post, we saw the police, so I asked the cats to slow down and hit the brakes.
On the back seat, we found some clothes like scarves, jackets, and sunglasses. We put them on to look less suspicious.
We were driving brilliantly, and soon we reached home.
We climed inside the house through the window I had secretly left open earlier.
“Go ahead and help yourselves. You’re my guests! But don’t leave any evidence behind... not a single hair!” I told them, showing them the kitchen.
After eating almost everything in the kitchen and refrigerator, some cats lay on the bed for a nap.
Sheenu, the brown cat, patted my back. “That’s the best day of our lives. Thanks!”
Well, I couldn’t complain either. It was the best day of my boring life as a pet cat too.
A black cat who was napping on the windowsill suddenly announced that the family had arrived in a taxi.

One by one, all the cats quietly left. I also climbed out with them and sat beside our car. When the family saw me, they were so happy! They took me in their arms, saying how worried they had been and that they would never leave me alone in the car again.

Then the Father called the police. The police arrived for the investigation, but no one would ever know what really happened…
Except me. Meow!
